I am looking for a solution that is built into osx, i never really liked that utility for critical apps. is there anything built in.

After much searching and gnashing of teeth, I found a free utility that works superbly for this. It's called MarcoPolo.

What I like about this utility is that you can define contexts, or rules that, if matched, will then perform various actions including mounting network drives. For example, it can check for the existence of specific protocols originating from specific machines. If the rule is matched, then mount to a share point on that machine.
This works extremely well for mobile users who want to mount different shares when on different networks (i.e. at multiple office locations, home, etc.).
