The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How can I file share between my MacBook and Dell desktop computers?
I'm looking for someone who's an expert in both Windows XP and OS X  Leopard. have a new Macbook running Leopard and an old Desktop Dell running XP. I have a DSL  connection to the Desktop and the Macbook accesses the DSL wirelessly through an ATT 2Wire modem. the DSL line is connected to the modem and then the modem is connected to the Dell by an ethernet cable. there is another ethernet cable to another Dell in another room.  The MacBook is the only device connected wirelessly.

I used to have a Dell laptop connected wirelessly to the desktop and had no problems seeing the desktop files on the laptop machine and vice versa.  I have not been able to accomplish this with the Macbook. Have tried various solutions but not succeeded thus far. I don't seem to be able to name things in such a way that either system recognizes the other. I have tried to follow the directions in "Mac OS X Leopard Edition: the Missing Manual" but haven't succeeded.

Try to do a connect to server
Then enter the IP address of the windows server with the syntax:
SMB://192.168.0.11

Not so sure if it works!

Sorrie.. the above steps will only connect to windows and access the shared folders...
But not the other way round...

Try this:

Hope it helps!

thanks, Darenceang.  I found that article very helpful - it got me halfway. So here are where things stand now:  I can access my Dell from the Mac  and save files onto the Dell which is great.  They seem to be read-only and  locked by another user, which I assume is me!  It does give me the option to create another copy and merge the changes later but that sounds messy.
Apart from that problem there is the problem that I can't get to the mac from Windows even though I have enabled windows file sharing on the mac and created an account for the Dell on the Mac but I still can't see the mac on the Dell. I keep getting the message that I am not authorized to access it.

any ideas?

Hi!
I never encountered the first problem though. I am able to drag and drop without much "messages" ;) When u "map" to the windows PC, did u use the Connect to server method? Try loggin in with your administrator account on ur PC.

When you try to connect from PC to MAC, are you trying to login as mac administrator?

Just a thought...
What mac os u are using?

To access the mac, click on the hard drive to highlight it, then type command-i (for Get Info). The Get Info window will open and allow you to set access privileges and passwords for sharing the drive.

Hi Strung,
I am using Leopard.
On my Dell I am always logged in as the administrator.  I wasn't able to figure out how to change the settings on my original administrator account on my MacBook so I created a whole new account where I could set everything up from scratch, but it is creating headaches for me because I have to log into my Mac on that account in order to see the pc and that's not what I want. I am the only person who uses either of these computers, you see.  Could the problem be that I have to change the settings on my main account, and if so, how do I do that?

Oops! Sorry. I had the links reversed. Should have been:

I followed the leopard instructions but the xp instructions said to go to go to my network places and click on entire network and my Dell is the only place listed. No matter what name I attempt to put on my mac hard drive I don't see to be able to access it. Keeps telling me path can't be found.

You may not have read far enough in the instructions here:  http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3020.html

About 2/3 - 3/4 of the way down it shows you how to use the Windows Network Wizard to connect to the Mac by typing the Mac's IP address.

I tried to follow the instructions but perhaps my confusion over the names of things is doing me in. I have to go to a meeting now, so I can't check back till later, but at this point I would be satisfied with getting back to the point I was at earlier where I could get to my Dell files on my MacBook without having a separate administrator account that I have to log in with instead of my usual account.  I am most grateful for your attempts to help me but I'm still stymied.  When I try to use the add Network Place Wizard on the XP system, and use my IP address with smb:// before it, I am refused.  And when I try to follow the step of connecting to server when logged onto  the mac as my primary administrator account, I am told that I can't do that either.

I think you use the IP address with smb before it to connect from the Mac to the PC. To connect from the PC to the Mac through the network wizard, the format is \\IP Address of the Mac\Mac Username

Hi Qvena!

From what i understand:

When you start the windows sharing services, a shared "folder" is actually created for you.
Thus, if you want to share other drives, you can see strung post.

SMB://IP ADDRESS can only be used when you attempt to connect ur MAC -> PC and not the other way round ( not so sure of that cause SMB is just a protcol used )

You might want to try this ( its from apple and i presume it SHOULD works )
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6704449

Quoting from strung , http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3020.html
you should "restart' at
Stage 6 PC to Mac
Start -> My Network Places
In there, it states to CREATE A NEW NETWORK. Have you tried that out? Most importantly, look @ the bottom of the page:
From the Mac
System Preferences -> Sharing
Select Windows File Sharing and it will actually tell you what to type in.

This is important when you try to connect to the mac from windows.

Hope it helps!

hello darenceang and strung,

Fortunately I have managed to get back to the point where I can at least see the PC from the Mac through my main administrator account and that will be a help.  I've realized that I don't really have to see the Mac on the PC. the printer is connected to the PC so I can save files onto it and print them out.  That ought to be easier than a flash drive anyway.

So thanks to both of you for your help.  I don't understand why my PC doesn't like my Mac, but I hope they can live together in their current configuration.
