The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Can't get a Gigabit connection on one of the Ethernet ports...?

Asked by rpc800 in Apple Networking, Networking Hardware for Macintosh, Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

Tags: , ,

I have a Power Mac G5 with OS X 10.4.11, connected to an Apple AirPort Extreme base station (newest Gigabit version).

The G5 has 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The settings on both ports (System Prefrences/Network) are identical, both are on fully automatic (default settings).

If use "en1" (the second Ethernet port), I get a Gigabit connection to the AirPort. If I unplug the cable and plug it in to "en0" (the first Ethernet port), I get a 100Mbit connection. If I manually change the speed to 1000MBit in System Preferences, it tells me that "the cable is disconnected".

I only use CAT5e cable (it says "verified for Gigabit Ethernet" on it).

I successfully ran this port at 1 Gigabit a few days ago, then it fell back to 100MBit. Unplugging and then plugging the cable back it restored the connection to 1GBit at a few occassions, but it kept going to 100MBit. But even this doesn't work since a few days now and it refuses to run faster than 100MBit. I tried numerous cables, restart, etc., nothing helped. If I move the same cable to the other Ethernet port, it runs at 1GBit.

What can be causing this and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

Robert
