The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Internet connection temporally drops on my Macbook, but is fine on PCs and PS3 and Phone!
Hi

I have a wireless network set up in my house via a Belkin Wireless Router, I have the following connected to it:

2 x PCs connected via Cable
1 x Vista Laptop
1 x PS3
1 X Macbook

Now they all seem ok and I don't seem to have any problems while playing on the PS3 or using the PC, but the Macbook is gving me problems. Basically when you start up the Mac and run Firefox you get the usual page cannot be found then after a minute or so then internet works fine. Then every so often firefox stops responding. and the internet seems to drop - however I have checked on the router and the connection is still there and in network settings the Mac still has the correct IP address.

I have tried changing the channels on the router but no joy.

Now I am a little confused as to where this problem might be, I think it is either the router setup , Apple Airport or Firefox!!!

If anyone has any ideas or experience of this or can help then please let me know

Thanks in advance

Ok, after some more digging this seems to be a problem with the Macbook itself!

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1231631&tstart=0

But any help or advice is still welcome!

I had a simllar problem, but it resolved when I updated to OS 10.5.2. If you have not already done so, download and install the OS 10.5.2. combo updater:  http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate.html

Once you have done that, run Software Updater as there have been a few subsequent Airport updates.

Hi thanks for the reply, however I am currently running 10.5.2.

I have started looking at the router config and using iStumbler to check Noise Levels and Channels.

So far still no good!

Check to see if there is updated firmware for the Belkin. I also had an earlier problem with a LinkSys WRT100N fixed by updating the firmware.

Check Apple Software Update as well. There have been several Airport updates since 10.5.2

Good luck!

Apparentely no update for the router either!

I have all of the current updates for airport so I am assuming there must be some other issue! HOwever what that issue is, is a mystery!

Thanks

The answer I always come back to is just bite the bullet and buy an Apple Airport Extreme base station.  This is the most expensive "fix" with money but the cheapest in time. These threads are legion and just go round and round. I cannot give you a total warranty that this will solve your problem but it did for me. All my pc's connect fine and the Mac no longer drops connections.
Accepted Solution

I will try and let you know, I will try and borrow one first!

HEHE If you live near an Apple store you can always return it if it doesn't work and honestly say it doesn't work.
