Tags:Apple, Microsoft, OS X, Windows, remotely share Mac files to Windows machines
Question is urgent -- I will be leaving town tomorrow with my Windows XP Pro laptop, and want to be able to access files that are on my home Macintosh workstation (OS X Leopard).
I'm assuming a VPN would be the safest way to do this, but I'm not sure where to start from there. I'm not very familiar with the specifics of OS X networking/sharing, especially when throwing Windows machines in the mix.
I'm familiar with Hamachi on the PC side and so I tried the OS X equivalent HamachiX, but could never get the Mac shares to show up on the PC. (I think there may be an issue with HamachiX and Leopard -- or maybe just user error).
If someone could illustrate instructions on how to accomplish remote sharing of files from a Mac to a PC, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Do you want to access specific files?? Or browse the entire Mac.
Setting up a VPN is not the easiest as you'll need to setup a range of options. The quicker solutions are below .. but not as long-term or as powerful as VPN.
Personally I use LogMeIn FREE .. install it on the Mac .. and you can remotely connect to it from any browser and perform tasks remotely. If you need to get files.. you could 1. Email them to yourself 2. Enable the OSX FTP service, drop them into the public folder and access them remotely via FTP. To have FTP work you'll need to open any firewalls on port 21 and route all traffic through your router on port 21 to the IP address of your Mac.
very simple. use Foldershare by Microsoft https://foldershare.com/welcome.aspx click the top right link to install and they have a mac and windows installer. create your account and then login when your away and you can access you mac hard drive anywher from the internet. I use this all the time with my XP laptop and my Mac Pro
