Plug them together with a Firewire cable. Should work from that point.

To verify, go to System Preferences->Network, and check that the Built-in Firewire is showing as connected. You can either run DHCP which will self-assign IP addresses for both macs, or configure as static IP addresses.

Cheers,

Joel

Hello Joel,

Appreciate the quick response and the 2nd mac does show up.

I was hoping to run apps as apposed to just sharing files and hard drives. I read there was desktop sharing incorporated into OS X 10.5 ?  Are you familiar with it?

Ideally i'd like a GUI interface to control the 2nd mac and run programs.

Cheers,

Chris

Also,

Eventually I'm planning on incorporating 2 PCs into the network. Those will just be for file sharing as far as the Macs are concerned.

Would you recommend static IPs for the 2 macs? All 4 computers will have their own wireless internet access via a router.

Will a static IP interfere with internet\router dynamic wireless ?

Thanks

Chris

Just use the built in screen sharing. Turn it on in the Sharing Preferences Panel, then connect using the Finder.

What exactly do you mean by "running apps"? If you have a web server running on one Mac, you will be able to access it using a browser on the other one. Any client/server apps should work fine.

I have posted details about running VNC between the two macs in your other question.

Cheers,

Joel

<What exactly do you mean by "running apps"?>

Applications (programs for us ex-PC guys). I'll need to run XP programs along with Mac via VMWare Fusion.

I haven't tried the screen sharing method as mentioned by strung but the less time in a finder window the better. I need to be able to view both Macbook's GUI desktop since desktop shortcuts are my preferred approach to launching programs.

I have used the VNC server\client but only via wireless. Would I need to set any Mac system network preferences to allow cotVNC to connect thru firewire?

No, just connect via the appropriate IP address for the network. As far as the Macs are concerned, all the networks are equal. You could also run an ethernet cable between the two macs and connect at Gigabit speeds.

The screen sharing mentioned by strung is VNC anyway.

The static IP addresses will not interfere with any other networks. What you want to ensure is that the wireless network is your default network (appears higher up the list in the Networks System Pref Pane), with the firewire network as a secondary network. That way, it will only attempt to use that network for directly attached IP addresses, using the default route for all other networks. Just make sure that the static IP addresses are from a different subnet to those issued by the wireless router.

The network will act as a full network, allowing remote control, file sharing or running applications over the network as required.

Cheers,

Joel
