Scanner not found

I cannot get my iMac to recognise and scan from my HP PSC 1500. When I open up HP Scan Pro it says

Sorry, scanner not be intitialized [sic]. (Scanner not found.)

However, I can print to the same device OK, and I can scan from it on my MacBook. A difference is that MacBook is running an older version of Scan Pro i.e. 7.3.14. The version on the iMac is 7.4.5.

How is the scanner connected to the computer?

USB cable.

It does not make a difference whether I plug the cable directly into the computer or via a powered hub (which is more convenient).

The upgrade was the answer. I had been avoiding it because it was a 116mb downlaod which seemed excessive since I did not want to use all the HP Image Zone features. I only wanetd to scan. Thanks Strung.
