Shared files on WIn2003 server are invisible and cannot be opened on Mac OS 9
Tags: Mac OS 9 and Windows 2003 Server
Hi,

I recently set up a Windows 2003 server and created several shared folders. Then Mac users who use OS 9 reported that they have some probems accessing those shared folders. The main problems are the following 2.

1) When Mac OS9 users access the shared folders, some files are not visible to them. For example, they can only see 30 files out of 100 in the share folder. The remaining 70 files are invisible to them.

2) The files that are named in Japanes characters do not appear correctly on Mac OS 9 machines, but they show some meaningless characters such as ??? and cannot be opened. Both Win2003 server and Mac have Japanese language installed.

Both problems do not occur on Mac OS 10. I checked the share permission on the server and it looks just fine.

Please advise on how to fix these issues!! Thank you.

Possibly the Win file names are not legal file names for OS 9. See: http://www.portfoliofaq.com/pfaq/FAQ00352.htm

Long and short - OS 9 file names need to be less than or equal to 31 characters and cannot contain a colon.

Thank you for your reply. I checked the file name in the shared folders but they are less that 31 characters. I also went over the link you referred but the none of file names seems to be illigal.

Actually we upgraded a XP machine to Win2003 and when using XP, all the files appeared. However once we upgraded to Win2003, some files becomes invisible. Since XP machine, we have been using a software called PC Mac Lan to communicate between PC and Mac.

It seems like the invisible file symptom occur to the shared folders that have many items like more than 50. When I created a new shared folder with 120 items, I showed all the items at first but they the number of item decreased to about 60 after 5 min.

Do you have any idea?
