VPN through a Airport Extreme?

Need some help figuring this one out...

Have a OS 10.5 server setup under a brand new Airport Extreme router.
Have VPN setup on the server.   Clients under the router (on the LAN) can vpn into the router fine - so I know the client/server is setup ok.
If I plug the server directly into the cable modem (sans router) clients can connect to the VPN using the WAN address with no problem.
ie ...

OS X.5 Server ---> Cable Modem --> Cloud --> Laptop   Works OK.
OS X.5 Server --> Airport Extreme-->Cable Modem --> Cloud --> Laptop - can't connect.

This has lead me to believe that the culprit is the AE.
Here's what I've done so far with no effect..
Putting the server's LAN address in DMZ (Enable default host)
Opened ports 1723, 500 & 62514 and pointed them at the LAN address of the server

Anyone have any ideas on what's keeping this from working?
