old mac laptop 2001 :) i know osx bit not previous

how do i know what version it is how do i upgrade it and how do I connect to the internet. I have a network cable pluged in same switch as my osx mac and osx connects no problem but can not get connected on teh other mac? any help would be great

Well, lets start by telling us the model on the case.
For what version, click on the apple menu, and choose "about this mac" (Or something similar, haven't used older macs in a while)

mac os rom ius 7.9.1 memory is 192mb

You don't have enough memory to run OS X. Suggest you stay with OS 9.1. To set up the internet drag down the Apple Menu to control panels and open the TCP/IP control panel. Set TCP/IP to connect automatically (DHCP) and you should be in business.

You can't run snow leopard without an intel chip, the ibook would be a G3. Strungs info on setting up internet is the way to go.

i try to open apple menue in control panel and get the following error

there has been a error opening the prefrences file. as a result apple menue options can not launch?

Open the Utilities folder and open Disk First Aid and repair the drive.

Frankly, it is not worth it. It will be dog slow unless you upgrade the RAM. Also, OS X is not free. The cost of upgrading the RAM and adding OS X would be more than the computer is worth. Better to buy a newer used Mac with OS X already installed.
