Boot problems with Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.2; Need Suggestions

Tags: Apple, OSX, 10.2
This powerbook G4 suffers a permission based crash once a year.  It has also suffered two disk crashes over a five year period.  Originally, the intended use of this laptop was as an osx system running os9 in emulation mode.  OS9 is still alive and well in scientific laboratories and is used by measurement equipment.  After migrating osx work to a contemporary imac, I rebuilt the powerbook G4 as a solo osx system and updated to the highest level of osx 10.2 (reformat and reinstall).  Now this machine can't find the boot sector.  I have to use bootmanager to get it to boot.  I can't seem to isolate the cause of this problem.  Apple was no help (they did not want to see the machine and offered no advice)
