MAC - Leopard and Parallels - How to get printer working in Windows XP via Parallels?

Hi,
Brand new to MAC :)  I love it so far but I still need Windows for some apps. Thus I installed XP via Parallels.  Now I need to get the printer working within Parallels so I can print when I'm in the 'XP' instance.  I have a Brother MFC 8220 and have downloaded the software to install it.  However there has to be a trick to get it to work within Parallels and I'm not sure how.  Start Free Trial

Is the printer USB?

If it is USB, it will need to be "Connected" to the XP instance before XP will be able to see it and print to it. A USB device can only be plugged into a single computer at one time - Parallels is a logically separate computer running on the same hardware. To connect the USB printer to your xP, click the USB icon in the lower right of your Parallels window (should be second to last in the list) and select the printer from the list. This will disconnect the printer from OS X and connect it to XP. When you're done, click on the USB icon again, and click on the printer in the list (should now have a check mark next to it indicating that it is connected) to disconnect it and reconnect it to OS X.

To avoid having to always switch back and forth, consider sharing the printer from OS X and setting it up in XP as a shared printer. You'll need to figure out which address your OS X system is using (check System Preferences > Network for the Parallels network interface and address.

I see a yellow parallels icon and it says it's 'Tools Center'.  When I open it, I don't see 'Printers' as a choice.  Is that the right thing?  Am I looking in the XP instance or Mac OS instance?

In the Parallels manual, here's what it says:

Before installing a network printer in a guest operating system make sure that Max OS X and the virtual machine meet the following requirements:

1- You have configured networking in Max OX X.  ( Have no idea how to do that)
2- The virtual machine's configuration includes the network adapter which is connected to a real network adapter in your computer.  To verify this, in the Configuration Editor, see Network Adapter Options tab for the virtual machine.  In the Device Status area, make sure theat the Enabled and Connect cable at startup options are selected.  In the Emulation area, you should select Bridged Ethernet and then choose the actual network interface in the pop-up menu.
3-You have configured networking in the guest operating system.
4-The user account from which you will setup the printer has permission to access the network printer.


#1 to #3 are greek to me in Max OS..

Please help.....

No - open System Preferences from the Apple menu, and go to Network. Select Network Status from the Show list and there should be a Parallels NAT listed there, along with a 10.x.x.x address. That's the address you'll have to connect to from the XP to get the printer on the network. You'll also need to enable Printer Sharing in System Preferences Sharing before this will work.

OK.  The System Preferences say the IP is 10.211.55.1.  I also viewed the 'Sharing' folder and 'Printer Sharing' is enabled and the printer name is 'Brother MFC-8220'.  So now when I goto Windows and try to install a network printer I can never find it...  What exactly do I need to do there to find it?  I tried typing in \\10.211.55.1\Brother MFC-8220   and no dice....

OK. I found #2 above in the Parallels configuration settings.  I selected everything as stated and my Bridged Ethernet, I chose 'Default Adapter'.  Still can't find the printer withiin Windows to connect.

The IP is actually 10.211.55.2

I neglected to mention that you'll also need to enable Windows Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences, and  enable your account for Windows sharing using the Accounts button on the Windows Sharing screen.

Once you've got Windows Sharing turned on, go back to XP, and go to \\10.211.55.2, you should be asked for the username and password to login to the OS X machine. Use the shortname for your account (ie: johndoe or whatever you set your shortname as, not John Doe) and the password to authenticate here. Then, when you're given the list of shared items, right click on the printer, and click connect. This will install the printer on your XP.

You could also manually install the printer using the Add Printer wizard, and the "network printer or printer attached to another computer" option.

Haha - don't sell the Mac. Once you get the hang of it you'll never want to go back. I'll need to research this a bit more as Printer Sharing seems to be a change in the Leopard operating system from the previous Tiger configuration. I'll let you know what I find - don't get too discouraged. Mac is a wonderful thing.

I found this thing called 'Bonjour' and installed it on Windows and it worked. I can now print from XP in the virtual machine.  I will give you the points for trying to help.  If you find anything on how to do it the other way, feel free to post to this after it's closed.
