Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac - Excel slow

I upgraded from MS Office 2004 to MS Office 2008 on my MacBook running OS-x 10, with lots of memory ( 4GB RAM).  MS Office 2008 is much too slow to use in operations such as moving from cell to cell,  finding entries in filters, and almost every other way.   Basically, I cant use it at all since it is painfully slow.  

I  also run MS Office 2007 using Parallels on the same MacBook machine, which is very fast , without problem.   I checked for MS Office 2008 updates and there are none currently available.    How can I get MS Excell 2008 for MAC to work fast.  TIA... Start Free Trial
