Thanks for the response strung, the first link shed some light. It appears that the problem is a root certificate.
Even though the godaddy certificate appears in the Mac's Anchor X509 keychain we are getting this message on the Mail Exchange server
What pertains to the 'root certificate' I have looked in the snap-in console for Certificates and do not see any on the exchange server that is named root. I feel that if I can find the certificate it is crying about, Mail app will work...

strung,
It looks to be a SSL certificate problem. We have two SSL certificates one that is *.companyname.com and the other that is mailserver.companyname.com
With the *.companyname.com those offices cannot connect at all because the certificate common name *.companyname.com is not our mail server address name, thus a hostname mismatch
I was able to successful connect Mail.app with Exchange for the users that have mailserver.companyname.com
