The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I cannot get any of my Windows computers to see the server share points. SMB is running.

Tags: Apple, Mac OS X Leopard Server, 10.5.2, Recently upgraded ffrom OS X 10.4 Server
I recently installed OS X 10.5.2 Leopard server cleanly by erasing the hard drive first, not upgrading. My Macs can see the server share points just fine however none of my Windows systems (both XP and Vista) can access the server. SMB is running and SMB will see the share points when used from a Mac. Any help would be appreciated.

Go the the run command:
type \\server_name

if SMB is running, the PC's should see all available folders that are shared.

try that and let's see.

SMB is indeed running and I can access the server using SMB protocol from the Macs but not the Windows Machines. If I "Go To Server" from one of the Macs, I can also logon using the User ID and Password set up for one of the Windows comp[uters. This problem has also stumped Apple's support desk as they feel it's a Windows issue and that's not where their expertise lies.

Let me understand, you have a Mac Server running SMB.  All you Macs can see the file server?  Windows PC's are the stumper, right?

What happened when you \\server_name in the run command on the PC side?  You need to make sure when you go to the HOUSE in preferences (double click the HDD and locate the HOUSE icon) that the windows file sharing is active and then jot down the share name.  That is what you type in the run command on the PC side.

Macs can see the server no problem and SMB is running,

Typing \\server_name in the run command, opens a window showing two empty folders on the server. One is "Public" and the other is "Printers and Faxes". Both of those are empty and not used and were not set up as share points in the first place.

I'm not sure what you are referring to as the "House" icon. The only thing fitting that description is the icon assigned a user account. When I check the preferences there, nothing relates to Windows file sharing.

Perhaps you are referring to an earlier version of OS X server. I just upgraded from 10.4 "Tiger" to the latest 10.5 "Leopard. It is supposed to be more user friendly, and so far it isn't. Thank you for tryin to help me fix the situation, but I'm starting to think perhaps the problem is on the Windows side of things.

No, not really, the good things is that the PC sees the public and printers and faxes.  That tells you the SMB is working.  It also helps in the way that we need to look at the share that you set up.  The sharing from the public folder is working and you need to copy the settings from that folder to the folder that you want to use.

Secondly, could you use the public folder and add sharing sub-folders from there?  Or did you have another location for sharing?

As per Kevo04, it sounds like SMB is working, or you wouldn't see anything when you type \\<server> in the address bar/run window in Windows.

It sounds more like a configuration issue to me.

If you are looking to create shares that are visible to windows, you would need to go to Server on your Dock, then Click the Server Admin application.  From there you select the File Sharing icon in the top of the application window.

Right under File Sharing, you should see elipses that say: Volumes - Share Points | List - Browse.  You want the Volumes | Browse option.  That will allow you to browse your hard drive to select a folder you want to share (by clicking the share elipse in the upper right.)

After that, you should have on the bottom of the application screen two choices of Share Point | Permissions.  Under Share Point you can select protocol options to make sure that it set to use AFP & SMB (the default in Leopard.)  You can also specify a custom SMB share name in the same protocol options window.

In addition, you just want to make sure that the SMB service is green on the left side of the application window.

Once you've created a share this way, you should be able to browse and map this share from a Windows (and Mac) computer.  Depending on if you are using a directory system (Open Directory or Active Directory) you might need to modify the permissions (back in the File Sharing window for that folder).

Mapping/browsing is fairly straight forward: \\<server>\<share> where <share> is the name you put under the protocol options in the File Sharing window for the folder(s) you're sharing.

If there's anything that's unclear, feel free to post it.
