The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

External drives slow to mount/can't access iTunes music

Asked by hew503 in Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), iTunes Software for MP3 Downloads, Storage Technology

Tags: , ,

I am moving from a PowerMac G4 running 10.4.11 to a MacBook Air running 10.5.4. I have been using an Iomega 500GB external drive (using a firewire connection) as a backup drive, and to store my iTunes music library. The external drive has always mounted immediately on the PowerBook, and I have had no problems running iTunes with the application on the internal drive while keeping the actual music files on the external drive.

When I try to mount the Iomega drive (using the USB2 connection) on the new MacBook Air it takes several minutes to mount. Once it does mount, when I try to select anything on the drive it disappears as I click on it, and iTunes locks up and won't launch as long as the drive is attached.

I assumed this was a firmware conflict between the drive (although it is less than a year old) and Leopard, but there is nothing I can update from the Iomega website.

I borrowed a Western Digital external drive and tried it. It takes the same glacial amount of time to mount, and while I can open and copy the files without them disappearing and launch iTunes without it freezing, I still cannot consolidate my iTunes library from another location. I go through the process, and while I get no error messages, nothing happens either.

I don't think it is an issue with the USB port on the MacBook Air, as the external SuperDrive works flawlessly.

Any help very much appreciated!Start Free Trial
