Question

Change OSX Public folder's "share" name

Asked by: squidzink

Just set up a new MacBookPro. During the set up info gets sucked into various place like the Home fold name and the Public Folder's share name over my network.

My public folder is showing up with my full name on it, which is long and annoyingly truncates when it tries to display "My Superlong Name's Public Fold".

I'd like to update the Public Folder's share name to that of the computer/user name. I've done this with my desktop and other MacBookPro. But, I cannot seem to find the place to control this now. Can someone please advise. It's bugging the hell out of me that I can't figure it out and that I've burned time trying to find the answer to no avail. I've searched here as well and found a similar question, but the answer and actual goal were not the same issue.

Thanks!

At System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing

you can add a new share and delete the old one with the big name.

Thanks. So simple. Tiny followup question: when I re-tagged my user's Public folder, it now lists it on the network with simply as "Public," no user name or computer name attached. Both of my other Macs display their Public folders as User Name's Public Folder. Did I do something during set up that forced my actual name rather than the name I gave to the computer and main user account?

No it wasnt something wrong on your installation.
Os x write the config files for you when installing.

To fix your problem open your terminal and go to this folder:
cd /private/var/samba/shares/

In there you will see a config file for your public folder.
You can edit/rename it to your desired name.
Dont forget to change the comment area.

I attack my config file as reference.
Locateted: /private/var/samba/shares/oden's public folder

Odengr - It's been a long time since I've moved around via Unix. I managed to nav to the directory and remember how to pop pico (nano) to edit the file. I see the same structure you show above. I made the edit to the Comment name. When I try to Exit and hit return to save, I get "error writing public: Permission denied."

I only have one user on the MBP, wouldn't it be considered a root user with permission to edit?

by: squidzinkPosted on 2009-08-18 at 10:36:17ID: 25125594

Odengr - I enabled root and it let me save my edits. My file now looks like that below. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to edit the actual name in the "path." I only edited the "comment" so that my config would mirror yours. However, it does not appear to have had any effect in the displayed name over the network. I do appreciate your time and this isn't really a big thing, but making one's computer do what you want is always a plus.

You need to restart the service to take affect.

Just disable and enable from "File Sharing"  At System Preferences->Sharing

I hope this will help to resolve your problem! :)

Just doesn't seem to change the folder's name on the network. I've restarted the service and rebooted. It still shows at "Public" to the others on the network. Oh well...I'll just leave it alone for now.

I appreciate your time and effort to assist.
