The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Hi

Im trying to upgrade regular 80Gb Samsung Drive on my Macbook Air first edition.

I have bought Toshiba MK1231GAL 120 Gb PATA 1,8" Zif drive

The drive is same type and connection as the previous Samsung Drive.

Macbook Air recognizes the type, make and model of the Drive but can not format it.

How to initialize this drive to use it in Macbook Air??

I have tried:
 10.5.8 Leopard disk utiliy
10.6.0 Snow Leopard Disk Utility
Ipartition 1.5.7 (313)
Volume Works 2.1
Terminal Command
tried Backtrack 4 (doesnt boot the Macbook)
tried Slax Linux (doesnt boot the Macbook)
tried Hirens (doesnt work on Macbook)

all Mac software is crashing during Repartitioning or Reformatting with Input/ Output error.

Drive is brand new, connection is OK.

The others have tried it and failed with the same problem. There is nothing else on Google so Im looking for someone's magic trick and not google search.

1. Are there any other FREE tools for formatting this drive which dont use system DISK UTILITY?
2. Is there a way of booting some Linux (have tried at least 5 different) and reformatting in GUID/HFS+ ?
3. I have the TRANSCEND enclosure usb box for the drive. I can format / partition the drive when in a USB box (it is called Trancend USB StoreJet) . However this format or partitiong dont stay on while the drive is connected without the USB box inside my macbook.
4. I need to find a way of initializing, formatting the dirve when connected in the Macbook.
5. Firmware update could be useful however I couldnt find any.

Please help if you can.

Best

Michael
