Question

Mac OSX Printing

Asked by: Macuser206

I recently lost the hard drive on one of the IMacs in my network. I need help getting my printer (HP5SI) to print using Mac OS10.5 . Printer seems only to work through sharing as it seems to see the printer on one of the other machines and print through it but.it is very slow. I called Apple and they had me add the printer as an IP Printer and that did not work either. Any ideas.

Try downloading and installing the Gutenprint drivers:  http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

Did you try resetting printing system?
System Preferences > Print & Fax > right-click on Printers list

If the printer has PostScript installed (most likely, as it worked on the Mac before), drivers for the 5SI will be on the Mac.

If it is network connected, add it as an IP printer as Apple suggested. I hope you know the IP address of the printer (print a config page to check). If the Mac does not find the correct printer type, search for it manually.

I downloaded and installed the gimp-print. I then added a "new" printer using the HP 5si IP address. Did not work. I then looked at resetting the system. The printers listed include the same printer but THROUGH another person's computer. When set to this printer itprints but VERY,VERY slowly. It took about 5-6 minutes to generate a page. Seems the only  way I can get any printing

What do you mean you "looked at resetting the system"? Did you reset it or not? When the printing system is reset, all printers are deleted. Only after that you should try adding the printer again.

Sorry I did not know that. How then do I reset the printing system. Sorry I am new to 10.5 All of my other machines are 10.4

No problem. Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax.
Right-click anywhere in the printer list, you can even right-click any of the printers that you see there.
In the pop-up menu that will appear, you will see the option "Reset printing system"

OK- I tried to reset the printer system. When I added the printer under IP printers and try to print the  message when I click on the printer to check the status it reads...
Connecting to 192.168.1.35 on port 631...
Then Unable to connect to printer ...retry in 30 seconds BUT it never really prints.

I can connect by adding another printer ...192.168.1.35@Loretta DeCicco. (Loretta is on another Imac in the network. When I specify that parinter I can print but at a rate of one page about every 5 minutes. This is unacceptalbe as this Imac is used to generate 6 page invoices and 30 minutes per invoice wont do.
Thanks for bearing with me on this one.

First, the reason that you are adding IP printer is because it does not show in "Default" browser? Or because Apple told you to do so? It's always better to add a printer from "Default".

Second, port 631 is used in IPP protocol - not what you want. In "IP" window the protocol should be LPD, address: 192.168.1.35 and Queue should be blank
Here is a tip: after typing the Address the system should automatically suggest the correct driver under "Print Using:" - what does it give you?
