It is a straight OD setup there is really no AD involved in the log in process here.

The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help.
We are using an AFP server (Tiger sever) to host the users' home folders, but certain users sometimes get this problem, it seems to come and go without any real changes being made.
The settings on the client box are ok, I can log in with my credentials. The User cannot log in to other boxes. The users' profile is ok, it is the AFP server's inability to find the home folder I assume. Other users on the same AFP server can log in.

Is your setup a strait Open Directory setup or are you using the "Golden Triangle" (authentication through AD and home folders on OD). If you are using strait OD I would check user permissions on the drive. Also enable Logging on AFP in the server roles. I Have seen this error occur when there is alot of network traffic. Apple uses live home folders instead of copying up and down like Microsoft.
