Question

Changeip -checkhostname says DNS hostname is not available.

When I run changeip -checkhostname (Xserve OS X 10.5) it says

Primary address = 192.168.1.2
Current Hostname = bxxxxxx.dyndns.biz

The DNS hostname is not available, please repair DNS and re-run this tool.

Please give suggestions on the next step to move this along to resolution.

try ping www.google.com and see if you get any resolution

The host command accepts arguments that are either the fully qualified domain name or the IP address of the server when providing results. To perform a forward lookup, use the syntax:

[root@bigboy tmp]# host www.linuxhomenetworking.com
www.linuxhomenetworking.com has address 65.115.71.34
[root@bigboy tmp]#
To perform a reverse lookup

[root@bigboy tmp]# host 65.115.71.34
34.71.115.65.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer 65-115-71-34.myisp.net.

This error will continue to appear on any Mac Server running above versions 10.4.8 - Apple made the setting up of the DNS service a requirement. You should create a default zone even if the server is not your primary or secondary DNS server.
