You will need to create an MX record for your domain name - the mx record should point to an A record - the A record should in turn point to your static IP.

What company are you paying for your domain registration? You need to go there and setup the MX Record to point to your IP address (ie.;66.219.130.145) and then set up an A record to point to your IP Address as well (66.219.130.145).

Make both of these mail.yourdomain.com

Once done, let us know what kind of errors you're getting. You may also want to contact your ISP and have them set up a Reverse DNS record so that you can e-mail larger companies (Yahoo/MSN/Gmail for example might not let you e-mail their users if reverse DNS doesn't match)

Make sure the Apple Server is configured to allow e-mail, when it says relay access denied it sounds like it isn't letting you e-mail out and the server itself is mis-configured.

Your server rejects outside mail because it thinks it is for someone else and does not want to relay. Open Server Admin and check under Mail service settings / General tab what is the hostname of your system. Looking at your log it should be xserve.theschoolchannel.com. Now go to Advanced tab and under Hosting subtab see if you have entered theschoolchannel.com entry in Local Host aliases.
incoming mail is coming to ian@theschoolchannel.com but your server (if not set otherwise) would only accept mail sent to ian@xserve.theschoolchannel.com.

hboris, you were right when you noted that adding the Local Host Alias, will fix this problem. It worked for me!!! I hope you got the points from this thread...

On another note, could you guys explain how is it that you point your Registrar DNS to your static/public IP? I now have my Mail server running like a champ  and I woulld like to send emails from and to the outside of my network.

For example my domain is: mydomain.com
My IP is: 64.235.235.235
My Mail server inside my network is mail.mydomain.com
My Server name is: server17.mydomain.com

What do I need to setup in Network Solutions for this to completely work?

if you are hosting DNS service for your domain than a MX record should be created in the domain zone that points to your server. If you host DNS service somewhere else then send them an email asking to put a mail exchanger record for your domain that will point to your server.

The correct answer has been submitted by me (fixing the relay access denied) along with other recommendations.

If the answer has been supplied to the provided questions points should be assigned. Otherwise people will be doing just that - asking questions, getting answers and then abandoning by stating: "oh yes, this could work but we haven't had the time to check it". This in turn discourages people to participate, thus diminishing net worth of EE.

You are right, however it is quite possible that the provided answers would not have fixed my situation due to other factors.  It would be unjust to leave points without knowing if this is the proper remedy to my solution.  It could be a remedy to someone's solution but maybe not the one I had.

your issue was specifically listed in the submitted log file and the solution fixes that issue, no question about it. Partial log listed below. Machine is xserve.theschoolchannel.com and mail incoming is for ian@theschoolchannel.com (note no xserve prefix).

SMTP error from remote server after RCPT command:
host xserve.theschoolchannel.com[96.56.138.36]:
554 5.7.1 <ian@theschoolchannel.com>: Relay access denied

also the user xcamarox stated:
hboris, you were right when you noted that adding the Local Host Alias, will fix this problem. It worked for me!!! I hope you got the points from this thread...
