Question

write permissions error

Asked by: ehanner

Our office network is running a mix of os10's and everyone uses the same user name and password. Recently on my computer only, when I try to create new folders or move images into a folder I get "The operation can not be complete because you do not have sufficient write privileges". This doesn't happen with any other computer and occurs if I am connected directly or remotely.  These files and folders are located on a mac server. I'm putting this in the OSX server group but it may be a user issue.

I'm a PC tech and will be trying to assist the locals. Thanks for your help.

have you changed your user id/name? was any change done on the server?

Thanks omarfarid,
I'm not totally sure if there was anything done on the server. I did hear that a PW was changed but then changed back. The thing is this one laptop is the only computer that is having a problem with write permissions. It's an art file storage server and many people are editing files from different computers.

Make a new temp user on the server and see if the problem persists. Then we can see if the issue lies only with the server. The fact that everyone uses the same name and password somewhat argues that the problem lies somewhere in your lappies OS but it is worth verifying. It is always safer tinkering with a client then the server. I assume you fixed permissions on your client. Finally, how do you manage client OS updates?

This is actually my daughters work laptop that I am writing about. The network has been unreliable in general for a long time and no one really has a handle on managing a network. As I said above, I'm a PC admin and am mostly useless on a mac system. That said I want to help my daughter and this company if I can. The one guy who was pretending to be the IT guy just skipped out so now they really some professional help. They bought an Apple server for 12 grand that was fouled up and sent back to Apple to be rebuilt apparently. The server is a file server used to store the images they use on the web site and I think some day to day inventory data.

I don't know what if anything my daughter is doing for updates. I'll ask her tomorrow. My plan here is to try to get somewhat up to speed on the mac OS so I can step in and lend a hand now and then.

This permissions thing came up just as the old IT guy was leaving, on his last day. The suspicion is there may be some foul play but honestly, I don't think he's good enough to be to evil.

I will have her create a new folder (if she can) on the server and see if the symptoms are the same on the new folder.

I suspect there may be several issues that should be addressed here. I'll be happy if we can get write permissions back for the moment. If this were an Windows AD issue I would be looking at rejoining the computer account to the domain so permissions and rights work properly. For as much as MS has "borrowed" from Apple I'll be surprised if it isn't something similar here.

Why did she say no?
LOL
I. If the temp user exhibits the same symptoms
then , in that case, she is almost certainly either:
  A not updating at all
  B Using the auto updater

II. In either case
   A. fix the permissions of the laptop using the
        OS's disk utility: user/applications/utilities/disk utility
   B. go to Apples download site and download the current combined manual update .dmg (whether Tiger or Leopard)
   C Fix permissions again

III. try to connect.
IV report back

pheidius,
Here is the message I got back from my daughter.

"i cant create any new folders on the server.I also cant move images into different folders. i never update my computer-dont know how....when I open any of the 2b excel sheets, it says [Read Only]
yeah so what do i update????"

I sent her the apple page to see how to do updates from her laptop. It looks a lot like XP's Start>Programs>Windows Updates to me.

Is the disk util a program item she should be able to locate easily? I'll go see if I can find a page that shows how to reset permissions. The excel files she referenced are a running spread sheet she should be able to edit. It almost sounds like the computer isn't recognized as a trusted machine.

Update,
She updated the laptop which hadn't been done in a while. It is a 10.5.X version and she had over a dozen updates.

After the update I had her run the disk utility and do a permissions repair. That seemed to go well with no errors. After a reboot she ran the AppleK and logged onto the server at the office. When she opened the Excel sheet it said "read only" at the top of the screen and she is unable to makes changes. She is unable to move files or edit images, getting the message the user has read only permissions. She looked at the details of the folder and sees the folder is read only.

I'm guessing the core user needs to set the permissions on the top level folder for 777 and for her user name.

Can you tell me how we can determine if she is in the admin or staff group for the network log in? A step by step would be helpful.

BTW  she is unable to create folders on the server. That would be using her normal log in name. I'm guessing that the core user would have to set up a test user account to test using another name-yes?

The question didn't really get answered. There wasn't much response to the question. This member did reply and gave me some pointers but didn't get back to me in the end. I'll give the points to encourage other mac users in the future.
