Question

Leopard Mail Server setup question

Asked by: xcamarox

OK, I need some help here. This is just a plain setup question nothing complicated.

I have configured my Mail server as follows:
Domain: pretendco.com and my Hostname: leopardserver.pretendco.com.

I have configured/enabled Mail under Workgroup Manager for users as follows
testuser1, MailServer: leopardserver.pretendco.com
testuser2, MailServer: leopardserver.pretendco.com

I then went ahead and created a MX record in my DNS as follows:
Primary Zone Name: pretendco.com. (Fully qualified)
nameservers: ns1.pretendco.com.
Mail Exchangers: leopardserver.pretendco.com.     Priority 10

I turned on both services and setup Apple Mail to send emails to "this" and only this computer by using the usernames above, but it says that it could not locate the server, leopard.pretendco.com.

I know this is not OK to test it this way but Im trying to understand the way DNS and Mail services work. I know that I need to login to my registrar entity and update the records to point to my network/computers say from Network Solutions or the like.

Am I missing something or this way it wouldnt work anyways. Do I need to go out and update my records and keep trying from there?

Please let me know where is the missing step or just advise me in the right direction.

TIA!

Did you configure your workstation to use your xServe's DNS?

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:04:51ID: 23789292

No no this is all from the server itself, I have not configured any clients, nor workstations to work from this server. I dont think this would've worked...

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:06:13ID: 23789304

is the server figured to point to itself for dns?

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:09:41ID: 23789339

I checked this by setting up an email account in Apple Mail and I used the imap settings as:

Incoming Mail Server: leopardserver.pretendco.com
User name: testuser1
Password: ****

SMTP: leopardserver.pretendco.com
No Authentication

This is where I get that it couldnt send thru port 143 (It couldnt not receive, it timed out)

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:10:45ID: 23789349

How do I check for that nappy?

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:11:08ID: 23789353

I have listed my 192.168.1.1 router..

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:18:40ID: 23789449

Go into your system preferences/network

Is should look like this below.  If your router is provisioning IP addresses I do not recommend that you give your server a dynamic IP.

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:27:34ID: 23789567

My server is in 192.168.1.5 as the static IP and its pointing to 192.168.1.1 as the router and 192.168.1.5 as the DNS... But still nothing...

Any ideas?

AH HA!! we have a problem with your DNS.  We need to fix this.....

I want you to tell me, is your DNS on the server listed in lowercase or upper case letters in your server manager?

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:48:00ID: 23789790

This is only one computer that at this point its connected only to a switch with static  IP address, and pointing to itself for DNS and to a "router" of 192.....1.1. At this point only one server is in my Workgroup Manager...

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-03-03 at 14:53:49ID: 23789857

Does not matter.  Your DNS is not working.  Until your dns is configured properly, nothing will work.

Can you please tell me the status of your dns please post a screenshot.

nappy, the computer just went down and I was doing it over a remote connection... I have to get to the location and restart it again, it will take me 30 minutes to do so... If you are still around I'll post again... If we fix this problem I will bump up the points for this question...

Thanks for your help!!!

I'll be back!

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-04 at 12:20:58ID: 23799006

nappy_d, I was able to fix my DNS problems and now all my emails work!!!

On another note, could you explain how is it that you point your Registrar DNS to your static/public IP? I now have my Mail server running like a champ  and I woulld like to send emails from and to the outside of my network.

For example my domain is: mydomain.com
My IP is: 64.235.235.235
My Mail server inside my network is mail.mydomain.com
My Server name is: server17.mydomain.com

What do I need to setup in Network Solutions for this to completely work?

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-03-04 at 12:33:12ID: 23799138

You should:

  1. Contact Network Solutions and ask them to create an MX record for your public DNS entry
  2. You will need to open port 25 on your firewall to forward email traffic to your server
  3. You should also ask Network Solutions to create an SPF record for you to help minimize SPAM  Here is a link on SPF and creating an SPF record for your domain
You can use Microsoft's Online wizard http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safety/content/technologies/senderid/wizard/

Or this one

by: xcamaroxPosted on 2009-03-04 at 12:36:50ID: 23799178

Can't I just create it myself? Right now my domain does not point to anything, I think I have the option to change it myself.

How would my registry look with all the information I posted above?

by: nappy_dPosted on 2009-03-04 at 12:48:23ID: 23799303

no one will find your mail server tho if you host it yourself right now.

This google search has tonnes of information for you... http://www.google.ca/search?q=how+to+host+my+own+dns+serer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
