Question

Kerberos "Stopped" after Leopard Server restart

Asked by: td234

I have a problem with my Open Directory on Leopard Server. I have DNS running correctly for forwards and reverse. My hostname is correct. I can set as Open Directory  Master and all is fine, until I have to restart the machine. Then it says "Kerberos is: stopped". I have looked in the logs for Open Directory, but can not find anything that seem relevant.

Can someone please tell me what to look for to find the problem!

Thanks.

There is a problem with your DNS that is casuing Kerberos to fail.

Typically when this happens, you may have to rebuild your OS.  I had this happen once and contacting Apple's enterprise support, their answer was "archive and install, which I found disheartening.

HI.

If there were a problem with DNS, wouldn't that keep Kerberos from starting in the first place? My forward and reverse are configured and so is the hostname. They all match. I can change this to Standalone and then back to Master and it will run fine, until I restart the machine. I have gone through the OS rebuild when initially installed several months ago, and set up with the correct hostname from the start.

Please post your logs after a restart and Kerberos stops working.

Thanks nappy. Below you will see the log entries following a restart. Also added a nslookup (forward and reverse) and hostname.

The logs were the answer!?  I have a very similar problem and this does *not* help at all.

Believe it or not it IS your DNS that is the issue.  Is your xServe also your DNS box or do you have a separate DNS server in your environment?

What you should be doing is this:

If you have a Separate DNS server

  1. install your xServe
  2. at startup DO NOT CONFIG ANY SERVICES
  3. configure your xServe with a static IP
  4. configure your xServe's FQDN as you have it entered in DNS
  5. now configure your OD services and you should see Kerberos start all the time everytime
If your xServe is your OD and DNS server:
  1. install your xServe
  2. at startup DO NOT CONFIG ANY SERVICES
  3. Open your server manager and configure your DNS server and add an entry for your xServe

  4. configure your xServe with a static IP
  5. configure your xServe's FQDN as you have it entered in DNS
  6. now configure your OD services and you should see Kerberos start all the time everytime

What does
 >sudo changeip -checkhostname
tell you?

It NEEDS to check out without errors - otherwise Kerberos and other service will not work as expected!
