The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Workgroup Manager Preferences

Asked by diggisaur in OS-X Server

Hello all,

I still am trying to wrap my head around xserve. The client I am supporting has OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) and 22 Macs (a collection of iMacs and iBooks) that are running either 10.4.11 as well or 10.3.x.

The previous admin set up the Mac's to all log on to local accounts and have them configured to auto logon to an account so booting up goes straight to the desktop on these clients. Then they have accounts and groups configured through Workgroup Manager.

I've been told the user process is this. The user boots the Mac which auto logs on to a local iMac/iBook account. From there the user either does Go ==> Network and finds the server or Go ==> Connect to server.

Either way the user connects to the server, authenticates with the account on the server side they have been given and then mounts a share point to their Mac.

A few questions:

1/. How do you make mapping share points or volumes permanent. I think I have heard that scripts can do this but wasn't sure if this would work seeing as none of these Macs have computer accounts and are not using single sign on. Is there a GUI way to make that volume stick?

2/. I know how to share folders through Workgroup Manager but how do you share printers? I have a USB printer and an IP printer on that server I would like to share from it. Not sure how to find them under the ALL tab if that is indeed the same process as making folders share points.

3/. I see PREFERENCES under Workgroup Manager. Two sections that interest me are Applications and Printers. Will these even work if the client is not utilizing OpenDirectory and Single Sign on / no computer accounts/groups.

Sorry ran out of points so I can only assign 325. :( would assign more if I had them.

Thanks!
