Question

How do I set up Snow Leopard Server VPN so that it acts like one is connected to my LAN?

Asked by: ZoeticNepenthe

I am trying to set up a VPN on Snow Leopard Server. What I have now, when one connects to the VPN, the server assigns an IP address to the one who connects and their connection is sent out from the server. Instead of this, I would like the server to push the connection out to the router it is connected to and have the router assign an IP address to the computer and the connection is sent out from the router (like the person is actually connect to LAN). How do I set this up?

You're talking about radius. You'll need a radius compatible router or firewall and to set up the server as a radius router:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071130134610850

From a security point of view, this is a much better option as well but also more complicated to configure.

Tigg: My router supports RADIUS but I don't know how to set it up. I assume on the mac server the Primary IP address is the routers IP address (192.168.1.1) and the Shared Secret key is just a password shared between the server and the router. The router has RADIUS IP and RADIUS UDP Port and I dont know what those settings should be. It also has RADIUS Secret which is the password shared between the server and the router. So what should I set RADIUS IP and RADIUS UDP Port to on the router?

by: TiggPosted on 2009-10-25 at 10:45:25ID: 25657423

Hmm. The way it works with Radius is as follows:

1. Remote computer initiates a VPN connection with the router or firewall.
2. Firewall/router checks the PSK or certificate used for authentication.
3. Firewall/router requests a username and password from the remote computer.
4. Remote user types his network username and password.
5. router/firewall, using the preshared radius key between router/firewall and server, checks the validity of the username and password provided.
6. Firewall/router finally creates VPN tunnel.

The obvious advantage of this situation is that the VPN tunnel is managed at the router/firewall rather than the server result in a more secure connection.

I appreciate that this is the theory rather than more guideline but it should help you to understand the principles better. Regarding the actual setup, you'll need to look into setting up the router as a VPN server and then, once that is running, try setting up Radius.

What router hardware is it to work with?

Its a Cisco RVS4000 router/firewall.

Hi Zoetic,

I'm afraid your firewall doesn't support Radius for VPN connections (according to their documentation - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps9923/ps9928/data_sheet_c78-496735.pdf)

I would definitely consider setting up VPN from the firewall anyway though, as it'd increase security. Here's a previous article on setting up VPN from an RVS4000 -

by: ZoeticNepenthePosted on 2009-10-25 at 13:00:12ID: 25657978

The only reason why I have not set up the VPN on the RVS4000 is because I have read a lot of comments about it being unstable and not very secure. It also only supports about 4 user accounts on the VPN and I have more users than that that will access it. So what is a very good router/firewall that supports VPN RADIUS and is not overly expensive.

I tend to use Cisco ASA but if you don't know Cisco, this will be a very steep learning curve. Juniper have a reasonably friendly GUI and support Radius for VPN. I had a quick browse and it looks to start at about $700 with the JUNIPER VPN SSG 20 SSG-20-SB.
