Connect Windows to a Mac domain

Hello,

I have a Snow Leopard Server setup but i want to be able to add a Windows 7 PC to the Mac domain and for the Snow Leopard Server to authenticate the login.

Is this possible, and how? I've Googled for a while now.

Thanks!  I'm waiting for points to be refunded, then i will give the person who helps me another 500.

This is done through SMB service in Server Admin
Make you SL Server the Primary Domain Controller - that is if you don't have PDC on your network already.

ASKER

This is what i have on screen, nothing has been configured though.
Role: Primary Domain Controller
Description: Mac OS X Server
Computer Name: Mac Server
Domain:?
I'm not sure what i type in domain, and the number of characters seems to be limited.
SMB service uses NetBIOS domain name - type OFFICE or HOME or SCHOOL or whatever.
Should i just type HOME or HOME.local? I have typed in HOME.local, all i  need to know now is how to connect the Windows 7 client to it.
Thanks
In the domain box on Server Admin:SMB do i just type HOME as well? Or should i add .local
domain should be just HOME
Ok,

So i have entered the domain name HOME in Server Admin SMB

When i try to connect my Windows PC to the domain it says that the AD DC cannot be found.
I'm not connecting to a Windows DC so i'm not sure what to do next.
You may need to add WINS server (in network connections properties on Windows 7) pointing to your Server. Can you do that?
Plus, double-check that WINS server is enabled in SMB service > Advanced
I'll do that now and get back to you, thanks for your patience
This is my only error now, i am using admin credentials when prompted for username and pass.

You are supposed to use diradmin. The one that you created when setting up Open Directory.
diradmin isn't working, not sure why. Still the same message as above.
Have you added the WINS server IP to your Windows 7 network properties?
Yes i have done that
Well, I will have to look into this. Not today, though.
Thanks
Apart from what you have mentioned above, is there anything else you would make sure was setup & running before trying to connect Windows clients?

I was able to recreate the problem you are having on one of my machines (it was joined to the domain then removed, now it refuses to join back to the domain). Interesting... I will let you know if I find anything.
Thanks
Any ideas yet? Thanks

Actually, I think I missed a step with you. Try doing the above and if that does not help, post me the result of "ipconfig /all".
Yes i did give up eventually :-)

I took Windows 7 off of the PC, reinstalled Vista SP2 and it worked after i had changed from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated" - I found the info on Apple Support.

I will try the same with Windows 7 on the other PC and let you know, thanks.
the version of samba on snow leopard server is 3.0.28a-apple

The 3.0 branch of samba is not compatible with the windows 7 (for binding win 7 to a samba 3.0 NT domain)

It is not probable to upgrade the version of samba on the mac because of the tight integration between open directory and samba for the authentication backend (the hint is the version of samba is apple-specific.

windows 7 will however map network drives to the samba 3.0 branch without any problems

the instructions given by Maximus5328 work great with vista.
