Question

How to show hidden files in the OS X 10.3 Finder

Asked by: chadly2

How do I set the Finder to show hidden files?  I know there are several system files that are hidden, and most importantly, my mp3 files on my iPod.  I'd like to be able to copy these files off my iPod, but since they are hidden, I can't select them.

weed, this looks like a cool program, but I'd like to do the copy manually.

I've figured out how to do it via the command line:

cp -vr /Volumes/MyIpod/iPod_Control/Music/* /Users/myusername/Music/fromIpod

Note:  MyIpod is name of your iPod, myusername is my OS X username, and fromIpod is folder I created in Music folder prior to running this command.
Now that the files are on the hard drive, I can import them into iTunes.

However, I don't want to copy all files everytime I do this.  Is there a way to cp only files that are a certain number of days old?  Maybe using a pipe command or something.  I can do a "find" command to list them, but how do I copy only these files?
find /Volumes/MyIpod/iPod_Control/Music -mtime -3

Use the Go menu in the finder. Go>Go To Folder and type /Volumes/MyIpod/iPod_Control/Music/
Youll see all your ipod files in a finder window.

weed,  I tried this, and nothing shows up in the Finder.  Via the terminal I can see that the iPod_Control folder is hidden since it has a ._iPod_Control entry.  I'd love to show hidden files in the Finder, but don't know how to (easily) do it.  And I don't what to change the properties on my iPod files.

If you type the path correctly in the Go To Finder menu correctly, itll take you to any invisible folder and show you the contents. Right in the finder.

by: chadly2Posted on 2004-02-25 at 14:24:57ID: 10454855

Nothing...  I can type the path in fine, and it takes me right to where I want to be on my iPod (it shows correct path in Finder) but the files are not visible.  I'm running 10.3.2, are you running the same version of OS X?  Maybe it's because my iPod was originally setup with Windows XP, and then later I made the switch to OS X (best thing I ever did).

There are some wierd things going on with Finder Search too.  But I did figure out a way to pull up these hidden files with the search function.  Strangely enough, if I do a search for only invisible items, they don't show up.  But if I search for "visible and invisible items", there they are.  I then sort by date, and wamo, I have exactly what I want.

I'm beginning to think this is the way my iPod was configured with Windows.  I tried connecting it to another OS X box, and it behaves the same way, so I think I'm going to wipe my iPod and start fresh.

Thanks for you help.

I think the problem with the path is the name of you ipod:

Go>Go To Folder and type /Volumes/whateveryouipod'snamehere/iPod_Control/Music/
Youll see all your ipod files in a finder window.

Here is a program called invisibles... it will do exactly what you are wanting to do..

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14722

just launch the program and click the visible button.

In the terminal, run these two commands:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

killall Finder

This will show all hidden files in the Finder.  Executing those same two lines with FALSE instead of TRUE will hide the files again.
