The folder I want to access is the Backup one, which appears to be an alias - is it an alias of the network copy, which would explain why it is so slow to load?

If you have your iDisk connected then there will be a RTF file in the folder called "About your iDisk.rtf" and about 12 folders including Backup, Documents, Public, Sites .... etc.
Your Bookmarks, Keychain etc. files are put in the Backup folder by default

You can create a local mirror of your iDisk which allows you to save a local copy and have it update when it suits.
Open System Preferences.. go to the .Mac Preference and the iDisk Tab
Click START to begin iDisk Syncing
Now whatever you put in the local copy will get synced to the iDisk remotely.
HOWEVER it won't improve the speed of syncing with the remote iDisk in any dramatic way.
The speed of transfer may be due to to your internet connection speed being slow or restrictions on internet traffic on the .Mac side.
