Thanks for the help. I just found this out, but apparently Apple designed it that way (not being able to easily disable sleep mode) because the laptop gets really hot and has caused the screen and keyboard to melt. As to why this doesn't happen to PCs but does not Macs, I'm not sure.

You can untick sleep. When I tried it the screen still went black after I shut it but tapping the keys to "wake" it up also typed letters into a document.
