The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Network Drives and Network Printers on Mac

Asked by jamesnoe in Mac OS X, Apple Laptop, Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)

Hi,

Apologies, possibly two questions in one here, but possibly related...

On my network at home I have a NAS device that is also a printer server.  This device is imaginatively named 'fileserver'

When I open up finder in my mac, it will randomly find 'fileserver'  It makes no difference if the mac is turned on first or second.  Sometimes it will find it instantly, sometimes it won't.

I can do 'go -> Connect to server', but this is cumbersome.

I tried to do a Windows-esque map network drive by adding the locations in my start up, but this opened up a new finder window for each mapped drive when I logged on.

Also, I cannot get the mac to print to the printer on this device (windows can print fine to it).

The device is definitely visible to the mac as I can navigate to the web admin interface.

In a nutshell, my questions are:

1) Is there a way to force the mac to see 'fileserver' (i.e. if the mac doesn't come up with it under 'shared devices' is there a way to force it?)

2) Is there a way on the mac I can simply type an address (i.e. in Windows in the address bar of explorer I can type \\machinename)

3) Is there a proper way to map network drives and handle instances when the device isn't there (i.e. I've got a macbook so won't always be on my home network)

4) How do I set up the printer that Windows calls '\\fileserver\lp'?

Thanks
