Changing OSX action on opening playlists to 'Create a new playlist in iTunes with this name'

Asked by bayesianmind in Mac OS X, AppleScript, Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)

I'm looking for a way to change the default action in OS X for playlists so that instead of adding the playlist to the library, iTunes will simply add a new playlist with the filename of the playlist, and then add the tracks that were in the file to that playlist. I imagine I can do this with some sort of apple script or automator actions, but I'm a linux nerd, not an apple one so I am not sure how to do this exactly.

Versions:
OS X 10.5 Leopard
iTunes 8.0.1
