There's a lot of inconsistent information... While Amazon.com and some of their commenters claim, that it needs a 10.5 installation the official requirements from Apple's website don't mention 10.5 (http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html / screenshot below).

Lifehacker.com (http://lifehacker.com/5345690/prep-your-mac-for-snow-leopard) claims, that the last developer build was able to perform a fresh install, but they're unsure if the retail version is as well. The article also features a "Wipe Your Mac Clean and Start from Scratch"-upgrade method, maybe you should look into that before.

From my experience from past releases (10.5) it is possible to do a fresh install. It would be a horrible inconvenience to have to install 10.5 before the 10.6 update in case you reformat your drive - that's something rather untypical for Apple.

I was contemplating wiping and re installing leopard but does that mean I should bother getting Leopard up to 10.5.8 and then do the snow leopard upgrade and then try and re install all my apps or just wipe it completely after a format and then try and install snow leopard from the upgrade disc to see if it will install it and if not then do the above mentioned installation of leopard and running disk util to correct permissions before and after each update.

You should always update OS X to the latest minor version (now 10.5.8) as it improves stability and security. If you don't want to update to Snow Leopard right now, that's fine. Leopard (10.5) will recieve updates in the future, as it is the last version of OS X with support for PowerPC processors and previous versions have as well.
Tiger (10.4) still recieves secutity updates, although the last proper update (to 10.4.11) occurred in november 2007 (about a month after Leopards release).

Up to now everything regarding the installation process of the retail disks is speculation, simply because noone got their hands on it yet. The only information we have right now are the developer builds.

Apparently in the past those "update"-DVDs could only perform an installation if...

  1. ...the older version of OS X is installed on the system OR
  2. ...the install DVD of the older OS X version is inserted at some point during the installation of the newer version.
So you'll be fine if you have Leopard installed or are in possession of the Leopard disk(s).

Either way, after the check for Leopard you will most likely be given the options to upgradeto Snow Leopard, archive your old OS and install the new one, or erase the old OS and install Snow Leopard (that would be a fresh install).

If your mac has been running some time without a fresh install you should consider doing a fresh install, but make sure you save all your documents, pictures, passwords and so on...

In case you noticed that your machine is running slower than it used to, download Onyx (http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html - currently only available for 10.5 and older) and do some maintenance work with it - it can really speed things up without having to wipe the harddrive completely.

You mentioned backing up passwords - whats the best way of backing up / restoring passwords using keychain I believe  ??

Other then that I will be backing up and wiping and doing a fresh install and doing the updates as you mention and then go straight to snow leopard before installing my applications

Or should I install all my applications before updating to snow leopard or do the applications afterwards ?

The keychain passwords are stored in /library/keychains and /network/library/keychains/. Saving all files with the .keychain file extension should do the trick if the keychain system wasn't altered in 10.6. Also, you should make sure the new admin password (and username?) is the same as in the old installation. I assume that is because the passwords are encrypted (http://twitter.com/postpostmodern/statuses/51315242).

There are several backup utilities for OS X, one I frequently hear of in discussions is Super Duper (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html), although I must admit, I haven't tried it yet.

If you're not wiping the harddisk it really makes no difference if you install your applications before or after installing Snow Leopard. But I'd recommend installing the apps after you wipe your drive, because otherwise they're gone. (I hope I got you right there...)

Some applications may have problems running with Snow Leopard. A nice little app called AppFresh (http://metaquark.de/appfresh/) can help you keep your applications up to date, raising the probability of the apps running with the new OS.

According to my information (read: no warranties here) if you wipe your disk it is not necessary to install 10.5 before you install 10.6. Snow Leopard can be installed on a wiped / factory new harddrive (btw: this is a good opportunity to install a bigger harddrive) if you have a 10.5 DVD at hand. After it is veryfied you have a Leopard DVD, you will be able to continue the 10.6 installation.
But if I'm wrong and you  did have to install 10.5 prior to 10.6 it'd be a huge waste of time and a major annoyance to many, many Mac users - I really don't think Apple is interested in that...
