Put the new drive into an external USB enclosure and format it using Disk Utility. You should format it a Mac OS Extended Format (Journalled).
If your Mac has an Intel chip, you need to set the partition map to GUID when you format.
Then use the freeware Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive: http://www.bombich.com
