Moving OS X from one HDD to another (larger) one

Just a quick question, I am not familiar with Macs too well, but have been asked to upgrade a Mac from 10.3 to 10.4 however the current hard drive needs to be upgraded too.

So what's the best possible way of moving the current OS X over to the larger hard drive (inc profile, apps etc) - then I can do a straight forward upgrade to 10.4.

The process with one laptop is the smae. All you will need is a sata to usb cable.

Put the new drive into an external USB enclosure and format it using Disk Utility. You should format it a Mac OS Extended Format (Journalled).

If your Mac has an Intel chip, you need to set the partition map to GUID when you format.


Then use the freeware Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive: http://www.bombich.com

Swap the new drive into the Mac and you are in business.

If you use the OSX installer disc part of the installation process after the initial install is that it asks if you have an existing drive where you want to copy previously installed apps and settings to the new install. I just did this last weekend on a pretty sophisticated server install from 10.4 to 10.6 and it surprisingly moved pretty much everything to the new system even some settings I made within the Darwin system and not the GUI.
