The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Kernel Panic When Booting To OS

Asked by jmkotman in Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)

Tags: Apple, Mac OS Tiger

I am working on an iMac right now.  When the computer boots i receive:

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E598C): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Power-Mac4,2"
Kernel verion:
Darwin Kernel Version 8.10.2: Wed June 20 21:54:20 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.22.6~1/RELEASE_PPC
pannic: we are hanging here.....

Then in the background there is the screen with the power button symbole and it says "you need to restart your computer.  Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the reset button"

Steps I have Taken
1. First Tried to Boot to a Tiger CD i received from a friend
2. Unable to boot to cd (I press down Control and nothing happens)
3. Tried to replace hard drive.  When the CD isn't in the drive it sits on the screen with a little folder showing there is no mac OS installed.  Once i place the CD in the Tray it instantly goes to the Kernel panic screen.

Is there possibly something wrong with the computer itself?  What is the correct way to boot to a CD?  It almost seems like there is something wrong with the computer since i replaced the HD with a blank drive.  Any help would be appreciated.
