Browse All TopicsHello, I have an EMAC with Tiger OS X 10.4 that I recently bought used.
I'm trying to connect to the internet, but I get this message in the network status:
"the cable for built-in ethernet cable is connected, but your computer does not have an ip address and cannot connect to the internet" I only see this as a blink. It comes and goes like every second.
When I open the Network Diagonstics I see the Built-in Ethernet has a red dot and it says failed. However, it changes (blinks) to green for a fraction of a second and then it goes back to red and so on.
I have Comcast cable for internet and I was hoping that with just plugging the cable I was going to be able to connect.
I have a limited background on Macs, but willing to try anything.
Here's what I have.
It has Tiger
FireVault proteccion is off
I have created a new location
have tested it with 3 ethernet cables
Ethernet has this in the TCP/IP options:
Configure IPv4 = Using DHCP
No IP address
No subnet Mask
The ethernet Id is 00:14:51:04:db:72
and the configure drop down is set to automatically
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Have you tried deleting the Ethernet interface in the Network Control Panel (click on the interface and then click the "minus" button) and then re-adding it by hitting the + (plus) button and selecting it from the drop down?
I would also make sure you do the cable modem power cycle as mentioned above, as many cable companies use MAC filtering and power cycling the modem is the only reliable way to connect a new device.
Let me know if that helps. Good Luck.

Try this switch everything off
Turn on cable modem first
wait till it fully boots
