MacBook Pro Install

I have a MacBook Pro I am trying to reinstall the OS, I put the install disc in the laptop, turn it on and hold C. From my experience that will boot to the cd and allow me to install the OS. The problem is, when I do that the laptop sits there with a whit screen, 10 seconds later it spits out the install disk and then a folder icon starts blinking on the screen. I have never had this problem with a Mac before. Any suggestions??
