Question

computer to Video Tape

Asked by: rswift

I have an original G3 power mac with the built in ATI Rage Pro graphics card. I have been told several times that I can send my video creations out to video tape...How do I do this and what is the best size I can tape at?

I have Mac OS 8.5, Adobe Premier, 96 MB built in RAM, 4MB video RAM, VCR connected to computer through RCA ports and monitor resolution (one monitor only) at 832x624. No firewire or add-on video capture cards.

Thanks
Rick

While it wasn't said so exactly, your answer was tried before I asked the question. The problem is in the relationship between the vcr not getting a signal from the computer.
Your answer supposes that the problem is resolved. And even in the basic elements of video taping there is much more to do than turn both on and begin taping.

thanks for your attempt.
The question remains.

Does your vcr have sets of RCA for both input and output?  Mine does not, but does have a Co-Axial (sp?) input jack (jack?).

I have the RCA outputs running from VCR to the Mac's video-in (onboard, sort of, in the 7600).  The ATI video out has a splitter for both S and co-axial video out.   Co-ax runs from ATI card to signal (or frequency?) modulator ($29.00 Radio Shack) thence into the VCR.

Also got a Radio Shack audio out splitter so the Mac's audio out runs to both speakers and the signal/frequency modulator.  Co-ax runs from that modulator into the VCR - taking both video and audio for recording.

Using Mac-2-TV and monitors control strip I set the monitor to NTSC multi-sync turning Mac-2-TV on.  Putting a tape in the VCR I start recording.  Anything on my main monitor then gets recorded to VCR.

I've been creating in Avid VideoShop (now a Strata product in version 4.5, but I'm using 3.2).  It gives me a print to video command (as does Premier 5.x - but I haven't done much with Premier)  I've been creating at 160 by 120 pixels and printing at 640 by 480.  It fills the entire screen showing no user interface frames or other program artifacts.

If I hide the control strip tab when printing to video the result looks reasonably good.  I just finished a class presentation using this method.  It was a hassle finding the answers I needed.

My biggest problem with this method is the horrible audio quality.  I'm figuring out how to optimize the clips and recordings prior to sequencing them with apps like Media Cleaner Pro and After Effects, as well as learning to use Premier.

Still it beats spending a thousand dollars on one of those boxes with all the inputs and outputs for semi professional video production.

I'd still like to find out how to get my editing/movie-making applications to "see" my VCR through the ATI card and it's attendant helper-hardware.

Since your question is old, you have probably found the answers you want elsewhere or have given up.  But I'm hoping this post is of some help.

Good Luck
