I use a DesignJet 500 at work. No GL/2, no postscript. If you dont mind an increase of time due to the software doing the rasterization do the following to get the plotter printing from the mac (assuming you are using OS X)

printing/
1) Download and Install gimp-print http://gimp-print.sourcefo
2) Get this driver http://www.buymelunch.com/
3) Install the plotter as a LPR Printer using the PPD provided by the installer linked to above.
It's not an officially HP Supported driver, but then again, there ARE no officially HP supported drivers for the 500. I've been using this rig with InDesign, Illustrator, and Quark for research posters and it's worked without a hitch. The only exception being, as I said before, an increased time to process the print.
