Question

Please, don't suggest the Mini

Asked by: Pilate

I have an old Digital Audio G4 (667Mhz, 512Mb RAM). It is a wonderful machine and has given me years of flawless service. It is super-fast in OS9 but a little pokey in OSX. Will putting a faster processor and some more RAM in it help this situation or do I have to go get a new comp to feel the crisp, sprightly, OS9-like performance in X?

The New Dual Processor Giga Upgrade cards are awesome.
Combined with adding RAM, you would have a scorcher that will take advantage of dual processor
aware apps, and be compatable with future APPLE OS's and applications.

Pilate,

What is the primary function of this machine?  Just regular desktop applications?  Audio (GarageBand?)?  Video? (iMovie, FCP?)

Before ordering any RAM or processor upgrade, took time to back up all  your data, and then reformat and reinstall the OS.  You'll get some perfomance gain from a freshly installed OS.  (Run at least 10.2 or 10.3, and don't use 10.0 that might came with your machine.).

For basic usage (internet, and office), the processor and the memory is adequate.  If you wanna upgrade, adding another chip of RAM would be helpful.

For audio and video production, it is better to upgrade the processor and the memory.  But sometimes it doesn't come cheap.
A processor upgrade from Sonnettech (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/encore_stg4.html) will cost $229.  Adding another 512 of RAM will cost appx $100,- (PC133).  Approximate total cost $329,-

The questions are :
- What are you using the mac for?
- Do you have PCI card that you need to preserved?

For a complete list of available upgrade : http://www.macspeedzone.com/html/hubs/central/upgrades/processor/UpgradeCards.html

Upgrading RAM and Hard Disk are easy decision.  Upgrading processor is not, because of the cost (IMHO).  Sometimes the cost will reach half the cost of a new machine (for example a new Mini... :))

Good luck.

Aside from teh single processor upgrades from Sonnet, their dual processor upgrades would give OS X a big boost:

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/encore_st_duet.html

Adding RAM will help to a degree, but probably not to the degree you want.  You might also consider adding a faster HD (if yo have an older 5400RPM drive, switching to a newer 7200 RPM drive with either 8MB or 16MB memory cache would be a nice boost in speed.

I would suggest an upgrade or new computer.  Things are really heating up now in Mac OS X (esp with Tiger) and the OS is going to be utilizing more and more of your system specs.

If upgrading is not your thing, then depending on what you can afford, you may wish to get a new system or a used one.  You can look at http://www.macswapshop.com or (of Course) Ebay.

I use my comp for everything, but manily graphic design, but I want to be able to use GarageBand and do lower end cideo editing (clips for the web)

I have read that the original ATA-66 controller that shipped with my comp is a bottleneck to performance and that a new faster PCI controller card should be an essential upgrade. That true?

by: idarmadiPosted on 2005-02-01 at 22:07:38ID: 13200369

ATA-66 is slow compared to ATA-100 or even SATA.
But you can only feel it, if you use application that uses disk intensively.  If you use Photoshop to do 100MB file, you can feel it, as Photoshop uses harddisk for its swap files.  If your system is low on RAM, such as only 128MB and running OSX, then you can feel it, as OSX uses HardDisk for its swap.

Imo, you'll have a better experience with GarageBand if you use faster processor.  Your system (cpu and memory wise) is adequate enough for a low end video editing (using iMovie, or even FCP).

For comparison, I'm running OSX 10.3 with my Cube (G4-450), with 512MB RAM, with internal 20GB 5400rpm ATA/66.  Using it for simple video editing using FCP, Photoshop pictures with average size of 30-40MB, Dreamweaver them into web pages, Office X rarely, Firefox and Mail.app daily.  Sluggish? not really.  Slower than if I run OS9, I can't remember, since I've been using my Cube with OSX since OSX 10.1.   (1 film scanner, 1 desktop scanner, 1 external fw cd-rw, 1 iSight are attached to this computer, so this is a very busy machine!! :))

The only upgrade I installed in my cube is 2 200GB External FW Harddisk, and 1 400GB External FW Harddisk (to store the images I capture from FCP).

I feel somewhat sluggish perfomance of GarageBand running on my Cube.

my 2 cents

One thing I think everyone is overlooking is the video card. If you are into design, illustrator etc video card also carrys some weight here. Peronsally I think it is time for you to step into the G5 arena. At work I use a Dual 1.8Ghz G5 with 4GB's of Ram and it still isnt fast enough for me, I dont see how you do it, lol.

But if money is a major problem, I would look into upgrading Processor, RAM & Video card. Processor will really help with encoding speed, filters & opening large images in photoshop etc.. Ram will help less than the processor but I would suggest jumping to at least 1GB if not more. Video card will help with rendering images faster on screen, especially illustrator, photoshop & video. Also Hard drive performance can be a major bottleneck. Obviously the machine you have doesnt support SATA which I would suggest, possibly look into an expansion card for SATA?

You use a dual 1.8 Ghz G5 with 4 GB of Ram and it still is not fast enough??  What specifically are you doing?  We have a number of systems and our newest is a Dual G5 1.8 with only 1 GB of Ram - we are able to use Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, all of iLife '05 apps without any problems what so ever - in fact the only problem we are having is finding enough hard drive space for the capture scratches.

Conversely, I just purchased a Mac Mini for myself - and it chokes on iLife '05.  When I try using Garageband the system even locks up to the point I have to reboot.   Granted I only have 256MB of memory in it - but consider that we have an iMac G4 at school with same ram, cpu and video - and it runs iLife '05 very well.  The difference is the underlying system (frontside bus, hard drive speed, etc).

I think the real bottleneck is the hard drive speeds are not fast enough for the system speeds - I have seen a G5 machine crap out if it cannot get to the hard drive the way it wants .. hopefully these issues will be worked out in Tiger.

I already stated it, but I will state it again - since you are wanting to "... feel the crisp, sprightly, OS9-like performance in X ..." I would recommend a new system.  A PowerMac G5 - with an ATI Radeon 9600XT or higher and 512MB of ram would do you perfect.

Hmmm.. This could go on and on.
Your Digital Audio G4 is very upgradable.
Yes Processor Upgrades to Dual for supported apps, SATA or PATA and SCSI upgrades available too, as well as graphics cards......, Memory is another factor ...What do you want to do?
Perhaps the MINI is what you need...lol
