Getting Windows Media Files (specifically .wmv) to play in Safari

Asked by: ksntwebmaster

I'm having trouble getting any of our video content to play for Mac users who use Safari as their browser.  Here's a page with some video content links (none of which will play in Safari) : http://www.ksnt.com/test/ksn/insert.html

ksntwebmaster,

I have moved this to the Macintosh topic where I think you will have a better chance of getting a solution.

   Hi,

I tried the following solution, and it did not work... I keep it because
I don't think it is completely wrong, judge by yourself :

[does not work]
theoretically, it should be possible to do that. What I'd do, is to first
add Windows Media Files support for Quicktime, whose codec you can
    download from here :

    <http://download.divx.com/divx/mac/DivX521.sit>

once it is installed, you should try with a downloaded wmv file if it
works with QuickTime. If so, now we have to use the Quicktime plugin
    to get it working.

So we have to make an association from the wmf filetype to QuickTime.
    To do so, install :
    <http://www.rubicode.com/Downloads/RCDefaultApp-1.2.1.dmg>
Read the readme file to install it, and in System Preferences.app select
it, and choose the Mime-Types tab.

Your page produces the error :
'' The page “KSNT Video Viewer” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”, [...] ''
so we got the mime-type you have to add !

Type 'application/x-mplayer2' in the bar and add it to the list, choose 'other...'
in the application list, and select 'QuickTime Player.app' ...

...after having tried myself it did not work. It seems that the filetype used is not included
with the Divx Codecs. Maybe my solution could work if you find the adequat codec for QT.
[/does not work]

The only solution I can give you, which really *works* this time, is how I managed to
watch internet clips when I was running linux and BSD on my Workstations, but it's less
    ergonomic.

When you click on your links, you get a popup, from here you just have to select
Command+Option+v to view the page's source, and then you can do Command-f
to search the string : 'asf' or 'wmv' or 'filename' or anything that could be relevant
(most of the time you can easily get the video file by searching through all the html
    and javascript code).

Then, you can watch it using either mplayer <http://mplayerhq.hu> or Videolan
<http://videolan.org>. It may even automatically launch one of these after the
download, if the mime-type of the video is recognized.

Sadly, I'm not aware of any way to integrate mplayer nor Videolan inside Safari.

That's the best I could do, I hope you'll be satisfied

    Cheers,

--
Guyzmo

As far as I know, there is no plug in that will play Windows Media files within Safari. You could correct this problem (and save a lot of money) by encoding your video with QuickTime, but that's a discussion for another day.

The easiest way to Mac users to play the content from your site is to download Windows Media Player 9 from Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia

Windows Media Player will not play the content in Safari, but Safari offers to hand the video over to Windows Media Player, which will then automatically launch and play the video. I was able to play the video from your site with no problem.

You might want to get rid of the unsupported browser popup that comes up every time a Safari user tries to play a movie. Unless a Mac user is really dedicated to your station, they won't spend much time on your site with little annoyances like that.

If you want to play wmv from within a Mac browser - e.g. Safari - then the Microsofts windows media player can be embedded - however there is very poor support for any browser to media player integration e.g. javascript calls etc.

Tiger has improved this - but as far as I can see only for quicktime. However there is a product http://www.flip4mac.com flip4mac - this allows you to play windows media files via the quicktime player.
