Hi idarmadi,
The MAC version is:
"MAC OS B1-8.5.1
MAC OS ROM B1-1.2.1
MAC OS COMPUTER"
Is it likely to be the same fix on this version of Mac?
Thanks

Browse All TopicsHi,
My Mac user is having difficulty opening .jpegs right now...when he clicks open the file he gets the following error mesage:
"Couldn't open name_of_file.jpg because
a suitable decompressor could not be opened".
If he clicks OK to this message, and tries to open this fiole again it will open the second time no problem, but it's a bit of a pain.
I have re-booted, but that made no difference.
Any ideas?
BTW - this is heppening for all .jpegs, not just some
Thanks

Oh, I think it's OS 8.5.1
It's not quite the same fix as in OSX.
In classic os, you go to Apple Menu -> Control Panel -> Internet. Choose 'Advance' tab, and choose 'File Mapping' on the left colum. It will shows the file mapping information. Find .jpg and check out whether it got correct mapping or not. Else fix it to the application that you want to use to open .jpg.
You might also try to "Desktop Rebuild". Press and hold option & cmd keys at restart or startup until desktop appears. It will shows you a msg "Desktop Rebuilding" or something like that. Try this first before fixing the file mapping.
Btw, currently the icon of the .jpg file, is it just a white box, or an icon of an application?
Good luck.
Thanks for your help on this.
Update is:
I tried your first suggestion ("In classic os, you go to Apple Menu -> Control Panel -> Internet. Choose 'Advance' tab, and choose 'File Mapping' on the left colum. It will shows the file mapping information. Find .jpg and check out whether it got correct mapping or not. Else fix it to the application that you want to use to open .jpg.") but unfortunately there was no 'advanced' option in Internet. I did, however, find the extensions manager or something like that, and I deleted then added back in the jpeg mappings to quicktime photo viewer. No luck though, the first time I try to open the jpeg I get the error message, it is only every second time I try to view that it will open.
This error mesage only appears every second time I try to view an image...
Re, your second suggestion, I'm afraid I couldn't see any keys on the mac keyboard for either 'option' or 'cmd' - this is a standard type mac keyboard, where do I touch?
Thanks very much.
I would download and reinstall Quicktime. <http://www.apple.com/quic
Hi again,
I re-installed Quicktime, but still no luck...
I tried to change the mapping in in 'File Exchange' for jpegs to open in Internet Explorer instead, but it doesn't make any difference - they still open in 'Picture Viewer' anyway...
In windows, you right-click on a file and view it's properties to see what kind of file it is - how do you do this on a mac??
Any other ideas welcome too...
The equivalent of viewing properties on the Mac is to 'Get Info...' from the file menu, or [apple] + I.
Another idea is to check the exact flavour of JPG being used. Even though I use Photoshop, I occasionally get errors opening files. In these cases, I find that Graphic Convertor (http://www.lemkesoft.de/e
Have you successfully managed to open these images elsewhere?
hi mharcais,
I am sorry that no one has helped you in such a long time. I almost went over it, because I saw so many responses that I decided you were taken care of, and I am sure that is the same with many others. I saw at the end that you had many comments and then noticed the dates.
First OS 8.5 is extremely old Technology, It was first shipped in 1998. There is hardly anyone using it anymore, the, following OS's have been created since OS 8.6, OS 9, OS X, OSX 10.1, OSX 10.2, OSX 10.3, and not OSX 10.4.
Now days there are many jpg files that are created, which could have potential problems with many programs on opening. So it could be in part just because of that. Above JDub800 recommended getting Graphic Convertor, I also highly recommend this program, but you will need to make sure that you get a compatible version to work in OS 8.5. Here is a link to that, which is Graphic Convertor 5.2.2
http://www.versiontracker.
I am remembering that I got many of those type of errors openning up different types of graphic files, and the way I remember solving it was going to Graphic Convertor. Another way to at least work around this problem, is to open up the application (Graphic Convertor) and open the file directly from there in case you can not get to file extension part to work properly, but I will do my best in that area as well.
Now on the File Exchange issue, what is the actual extension of these JPEG files that you are double clicking on? . jpg, .jpeg or something else? You will have to make sure that each extension is listed in their and mapped to go to the appropriate file. I really suggest to map them to the graphic Convertor application.
I think that is probably enough for now, but I will continue to help. It has been about a 1.5 since I turned off my PowerMac 8500 running OS 8.5, I am now using a PowerMac G4 dual 1.25GHz, and OSX 10.2.8 and OSX 10.4, I skipped all of the others on my own system.
Thanks,
Steven Stuart
Hi mharcais,
Sorry I've not been able to get back to you - I'm just recovering from a bout of flu. Not very nice...
Aside from the Graphic Convertor suggestion above, which I still stand by, have you tried re-installing your system? I know it seems a little drastic, but it's a lot less painful than re-installing a Windows system. Perhaps while you are at it, you could get your hands on Mac OS 9.22, which is the last version before OS X.
The difficulty has been not only are you running a system that is many iterations behind, but the issue you are having is really only something you would have to see for yourself. A tricky one - sorry I've not been more help.

Mharcals,
You might want to re-assosiate the .jpg file to a specific application.
I assume your mac user is using OSX? Right click or Control-Click on the .jpg file, select 'Open With', and go the bottom selection 'Other...', and it will open a window. Choose the application that you want to open .jpg with. Don't forget to put a checkmark on 'Always open with'. This ensure that everytime this application will be used to open .jpg file.
IF the problem still persist, try boot from an OSX install disk, and do Repair Disk Permission.
Let us know how it works.
Good luck.
