The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cant boot from OS9.1 CD since I installed Pioneer DVR-109 DVD drive

Asked by Geoff1000 in Apple Operating Systems, Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)

I am changing to a G4 733 MHZ Quicksilver.  Came supplied with OS 9.2.2 clean install and had a Sony CD-RW drive.  I installed Panther, and all the updates, worked fine.  I then changed the Sony CD-RW drive for a Pioneer DVR-109BK (OEM version), flashed the firmware to R1.57 (latest I believe) with DVRFlashX2.1, installed Patchburn for Panther, whereupon the System Profiler changed from "Burn: Not Supported" to "Burn: Vendor supported".  CD's burn fine from iTunes, have not tried a DVD burn yet.  So far, so good.

Now that I have a DVD drive I can install Tiger from DVD.  I fitted a second HDD (HDD2) and formatted it HFS extended (journalled).  I want to install OS9.1 first from my original full install CD (assuming I do this first as was the case for installing Panther) but I can't get the G4 to boot from the OS9.1 CD.  Attempting to run the OS9.1 installer directly from Panther on HDD1 tries to start Classic, which hangs about 80% the way through starting (according to the blue sliding progress bar). I'm not too fazed by this as I don't think its the correct way to install, even on a second HDD.

I have attempted to boot from the OS9.1 CD in 3 ways:
 1. I hold the "c" key down as I restart, does not work, boots back to Pather on HDD1.
 2. I attempt to change the startup disc to the CD by holding the "option" key down, but this presents Panther on HDD1 as the only option.
 3. Using "System Preferences/startup-disk" the OS9.1 CD shows as a disk with a valid OS, but after selecting and clicking "restart" I get a small folder in centre of the screen, with a "?" on it, this remaining for about 1 second before it reboots back to Panther on the HDD1.

I suspect the DVR-109 wont act as boot drive.  Yet I tried the Panther install CD and it booted from this OK !!!  Is it possible that my DVR-109 drive will act as a boot drive for OSX and not for OS9.1??  My next thoughts are to refit the original Sony CD-RW drive and boot from that to install OS9.1 (I am assuming thats how the store clean installed the OS9 before delivery), then refit the Pioneer DVR-109.  This will be a painful way to install OS9.1.  Does anybody have  any other fix to suggest which does not involve a drive-swap?Start Free Trial
