Thanks for that - can now see the duplicates, but have to manually go through and select & delete them. Is there any way of automatically doing this?
Also, is there a way of sorting by folder/filename?

Browse All TopicsI've tried iTunes and to be blunt I don't like it. I know this is heresy, but it strikes me that iTunes is just a way of Apple selling music through their website. IMHO it is definitely not "the best music player" as Apple would have you believe.
Some issues:
- it copies my MP3 collection into its own managed area. I am quite happy with my file structure, why can't it use that?
- How do you delete duplicate entries from playlists?
- How do you manage your music - I have all my CDs in MP3 format which takes up about 60Gb on an external disc. I just want to copy a sub-section to my disc and add/delete items as necessary.
- Do you have to buy the very overpriced music from the iTunes store? Are there alternative sites? It's often *much* cheaper to buy the CD from Amazon.co.uk! I tend to listen to lots of '70s stuff which is now far cheaper than iTunes.
Question: what's the best alternative media player to iTunes?
Cheers,
Glenn

no automatic way inside of itunes. I wouldn't want itunes doing that for me because lots of songs may have the same name and or artist, but one might be live, one might be a remix, etc.
You can sort any way you want, just click on the column; but since itunes isn't organizing your music for you, there's no way to have itunes show you what folder/filename it's in. You can reveal the file by pressing command-r I think.
Surprisingly, the main choices for the Mac platform are very similar to the choices for the PC for music playback - Windows Media Player, Realplayer, and iTunes. I'd suggest installing the other two, and seeing which best meets your preferences.

RealPlayer:

Just turn off the store in preferences if you don't want to see the store.
Turn off the option to keep your music organized.
command delete, but not from smart playlists - you have to do it in a normal playlist or the library. there is a menu option to show duplicates.
drag the items from the itunes window to the destination folder/drive.
In many cases it is cheaper to get the full CD from Amazon vs. iTunes. But if the CD only contains 1 or 3 good songs, iTunes is cheaper and the encoding has already been done for you.
