Well, first, your life will be more interesting since I see you are running on Intel hardware.

Often, when I get "can't unmount" error messages, I just wait 10 seconds and try again.  Most of the time it succeeds.  If it doesn't succeed, a reboot is usually required to remove the errant item that is keeping the disk mounted  (and having the current directory in the terminal set anywhere on the drive counts for this too.)

I usually advocate using the Disk Utility from the OS Install CD/DVD to fix up problems (accessed via a menu-item in the installer), except in this case.  I read a report that the 10.4.0 Disk Utility won't fix some things on a 10.4.3 disk. If you have a 10.4.3 system installed on the firewire drive, what happens if you boot from that and do a "disk repair" on the internal drive?

Do your apps run if you boot without the firewire drive attached?

I too would go the route of booting off of an external drive to perform the repair. though Im wondering how current of a backup you have since the clicking sound you report is almost certainly a head seek error and those never get better, only worse.

I agree with all the above. Running disk utility from another machine through firewire target mode or from the os x installation Cd is what it takes to really fix major "fixable" errors . The only thing I might question is, did the Lacie come with its own install cd? That may have a proprietary disk check software package designed specifically for that drive.  A clicking sound, though,  usually equals "look closely at  the purchase date and warranty." Good luck.

No clicking.

Internal boot drive.

Problems CS2 curruption & too long not on sparse image (disk0s3).

Reinstall/formats fixed. Dreamweaver & Photoshop on disk0s3.

FW HDD now has Disk Repair available but often unmountable, partition always both.

Kind regards,

CD with drive but requires disk repair(s)/permission(s) before use. Is top level (only drive) sufficient?

by: walsellersPosted on 2006-01-29 at 15:59:20ID: 15819996

I don't really understand what it is you are asking. You might want to re-phrase it.

I should probably point out that since you've accepted an answer to your post, the only people who will see any further questions are the same people who have already replied. So, you probably won't get the attention you need for the best solution possible on further questions.

Thanks very much for everyones contributions.

If a Disk is mountable with at least Disk Repair, Repair Permissions or both do any take precedence over another especially when referring to Disks Partitions(s) which have these options available also (guess not?)
