Before you buy any of the above mentioned cards, I would pop over to www.strangedogs.com and read though the forums. The folks there hobby in expanding the availability of Mac cards though experimentation. They mod roms and reflash PC versions to work with Macs. This can save you a good deal of money because there is an historical price premium for a Mac OEM card and there is also often a downgrade in speed/pipelines/poor drivers/ etc. Instead of having to buy used for affordability or paying though the nose for less; you can often buy new PC cards with full warranties. You need acess to a PC to make this work. You buy a maxed AGP card such as the ATI X800 or the  Nvidia 6800 and pop it in your PC. You have to make sure that the core is the right one for both these cards, though, so read the forums carefully. You then download the correct Rom from the Strangedogs site and flash your card. Then just pop the card out and pop it in your Mac. Should the flash not take, you can can RMA the card back as DOA. As you seem to be in the EU, there is also an EU wing at the site that can change the eprom of an Nvidia card from 68k to 128k should you pick Nvidia and be too nervous to solder yourself.
Gotoh is the moderator to talk to on this head. Do not use Ruby Tuesday even though the x800 flash started with him! http://strangedogs.proboards40.com/index.cgi?board=experiments&action=display&thread=1114473559

I would pick ATI myself cuz there are no resoldering issues and they are more easily overclockable. Right now,  by the way, ATI has a clearance special on its site for the AGP X800 256MB for about one hundred U.S. dollars.

Remember! Double check that this is the right core image to match the flash you download. If not, just shop open box, clearence, and refurb at your mainstream hardware online stores and you will find one that will work.

Good luck

oops! Sorry it is a PCI express X800 that is one hundred US dollars. But if you scroll down there is an agp x800 for 195 u.s dollars. Just shop arround is the point.

Hi Pheidius,

Thanks for your replies. I've found that the cheapest new card is about €/$ 180, which is quite a lot more than I expected. The strangedogs mod is no option for me. I can do a lot with computers, but I always mess up with soldering. I don't need a top-card, just one that does the job. I'm going to try to find a 2nd hand card.

I have a Iiyama monitor with HD15 and BNC connectors. I just found out what BNC stands for, and that it could really improve the picture quality.

I've found a 2nd hand ATI Radeon 9600 XT card (€100), for a G5, with ADC and DVI ports.

Will a cable like this work and put this card and my monitor together?

It looks as if this cable is nice in that it has the BNC hookup for your monitor, but I think you also need an adapter.
Something like the one that this link hooks up with. http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200064&product_code=294667&Pn=Pro_Series_DVI_to_VGA_Adapter
I am not going to swear this is the exact one as I don't know for sure the gender of your card's output.  But basically HD15 is what I would call VGA so a DVI cable from the card would need an adapter to fit on the card's DVI out or on the HD15 in on the monitor if you decide not to use the bnc in. I am not too familiar with the ADC port though.
Also there is the issue of dual link dvi or single link DVI to look at. Check and see if the card supports dual or single link or both. Finally, before, you rule out Strangedogs you can arrange to have one of the moderators actually do the soldering for you. Also remember ATI cards do not need any soldering at all. ATI has new 9800 agp cards on clearance you could reflash to Mac open firmware and have a warranty for less money. All you need to do is to have access to a PC in which to reflash the rom.
