Question

Clean out .DS STORE

Asked by: Maxwellb

Hello,

We have a mixed Mac and PC network based on Server 2003 and whenever the mac's browse the network they leave a trail of .DS STORE files. From what I have heard, there is no way to stop the finder from doing this. When I was doing research on Mac / Windows integration - ADMit Mac was able to get around this by using a separate interface for browsing the network. Are there standalone applications like this? I am not interested in replacing the finder. I ended up just using the built in integration in OS X. Is there any application like that part of ADMit that allows browsing of the network without leaving behind .ds stores? If I ended up buying licenses for ADMit Mac, would I be able to transfer over all the Mac's that are currently using the built in components without having to un bind them and re bind them with ADMit Mac? Another option, has anyone made, or is it possible to have a script run on the file server that automatically deletes these files? I am aware of AppleOff (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18885), but I was looking for a windows based solution.

Thank You for Your time,
Max

According to Apple (  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301711  )  :

Mac OS X 10.4: How to prevent .DS_Store file creation over network connections

This article contains advanced material intended only for those who are looking for information on .DS_Store files. If you do not already have an opinion on this matter, you can disregard this article.

To configure a Mac OS X user account so that .DS_Store files are not created when interacting with a remote file server using the Finder, follow the steps below.
Note: This will affect the user's interactions with SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, and WebDAV servers.

   1. Open the Terminal.
   2. Type:
      defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
   3. Press Return.
   4. Restart the computer.

If you want to prevent .DS_Store file creation for other users on the same computer, log in to each user account and perform the steps above—or distribute a copy of your newly modified com.apple.desktopservices.plist file to the ~/Library/Preferences folder of other target users.

These steps do not prevent the Finder from creating .DS_Store files on the local volume. These steps do not prevent previously existing .DS_Store files from being copied to the remote file server. Please note that disabling the creation of .DS_Store files on remote file servers can cause unexpected behavior in the Finder (click here for an example).

Please be sure /not/ to clean out the other ._  files that you will see on your 2003 fileshares.
They are critical to any legacy Mac files ! They are not "garbage". The only person who needs to see them is you and just leave them alone :)
I can see no real, meaningful reason for normal users to "need" to be able to see invisible files and as long as they are not trying to view them, the .anything files will not show up.

As well, the trade off for disabling .DS_Store creation is that folder views for the sharepoints will never stick for your Mac users. As long as you know that you can tell users your policy is to disallow that for them due to the (harmless and tiny) .DS_Store files that you see as detritus.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25664

not really as expected, but you get at least rid of those ugly and totally useless (for the world, not Mac users:) files

You also my try something like:
#! /bin/sh
dir=$1
[ -d /Volumes/$dir ] && rm -rf /Volumes/$dir/.{DS_Store,Trashes,_.Trashes,Spotlight-V100,VolumeIcon.icns,_.VolumeIcon.icns}

by: heteronymousPosted on 2006-12-30 at 12:45:19ID: 18219731

Might want to add usage to the script:

#! /bin/sh
# "mycleanup"
if [ -z "$1" ]
then
 echo "Error, usage: mycleanup -dirname"
else
dir=$1
[ -d /Volumes/$dir ] && rm -rf /Volumes/$dir/.{DS_Store,Trashes,_.Trashes,Spotlight-V100,VolumeIcon.icns,_.VolumeIcon.icns}
fi

and save the script of course by the name: mycleanup
someplace like /usr/local/bin or ~/Library/Scripts

by: heteronymousPosted on 2006-12-30 at 13:23:47ID: 18219808

make it executable with
sudo chmod 0755 /usr/local/bin/mycleanup

or if anyone else uses your workstation (!) ..

sudo chmod 0750 /usr/local/bin/mycleanup

And you'll have to add /usr/local/bin  to your path, or call it by it's full location:

/usr/local/bin/mycleanup -sharename

where "sharename" is the name of the mounted sharepoint.

I'd use 0555 or 0550 ... (just in caseyou don't trust yourself:)

BTW, .DS_Store is just one out of zillion files being created/modified without user control, an administrator nightmare ...

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments! Sorry I have not been around to close this question earlier, I was on Christmas holidays. Anyways, I will grant the full points to strung for a quick fix to disabling the creation of .DS store files on the network shares. Thank you ahoffmann and heteronymous for your contributions; sorry for waiting so long to close the question - I know if I had done so earlier.

Look, again: If you want to trash your Mac users' files, then go ahead and just nuke those "pesky" ._  files.
Never mind that they *are* there for a reason. Let us know how it goes when your designers come for you with torches and pitchforks after you decide to throw them all out.

by: webbahPosted on 2008-12-01 at 06:17:41ID: 23068557

That's why I like Blueharvest.  The initial question is not about trashing these files on the OSX machine itself, but on remote server shares.  This tool is perfect for that.  Keeps windows shares clean and also FAT partitioned USB thumbdrives and external disks.  And it all happens automatically.
