I agree with rolust, however, if you do not want to incur the expense, you can use IMAP which will not give you as much functionailty, but surely give you the relevant permissions,
To configure Exchange 2003 (SBS or not) to allow to use POP3 is as follows:
1. Under services, double-click on Microsoft Exchange POP3 and select Automatic and then click start
2. Route POP3 (Port 110) to the exchange server's internal IP address to allow incoming and outbound traffic.
3. test pop3 connectivity from an external address.

Hi
MS version of Outlook is Entourage.
and use either OWA (Outlook web access) or RPC over HTTP.
In this way you still have the mails in your exchange and manage backups.
