I have recently updated all of the Macs on our university campus to OS X 10.4.11. Afterwards, I installed McAfee VirusScan 8.6 for Mac. This was installed on both Intel and PPC machines. Some machines are working fine. Others, however, are locking up or running extremely slow. Some can get to the desktop while others just sit at the booting screen.
When I look at the console system log, I find that the machines which are locking up keep giving the message:
lookupd[145]: Netinfo connection failed for server 127.0.0.1/local
The strange thing is that the symptoms and the error disappeared once I deleted both the Virex and VShieldEPOInterface folders from Library/StartupItems.
Has anyone seen this same problem? Any ideas why it would cause a problem on one machine, but not another identical machine? I'm afraid that not having those files in startup are gimping McAfee's ability to do its job, but my users also have to be able to work on their machines.
